Fridge Leaking Water? Common Causes & Fixes
Water pooling inside the fridge or spreading across your kitchen floor is rarely serious if caught early — and usually a quick, affordable fix.
A leaking fridge is messy and can damage flooring, but the good news is that most fridge leaks come down to one of a few straightforward causes that we can resolve in a single visit.
Common causes
- Blocked defrost drain. The most common cause by far. The small drain that carries away defrost water gets clogged with debris or ice, so the water overflows inside and runs onto the floor.
- Damaged or worn door seal. A perished seal lets warm, humid air in, which condenses into water. It also makes the fridge work harder, so it's worth fixing promptly.
- Cracked or full drain pan. The pan underneath that collects defrost water can crack or overflow, leaving puddles beneath the unit.
- Water line or filter fault. On fridges with ice and water dispensers, a loose connection or split water line can leak steadily.
- Fridge not level. A unit tilting the wrong way can stop water draining where it should, causing pooling.
Before you call: quick checks
Check whether the leak is inside the fridge or underneath it, look for ice at the back of the freezer floor (a sign of a blocked defrost drain), and inspect the door seal for gaps or damage. If you have a plumbed-in water line, check the connection at the back.

Frequently asked
Why is water leaking inside my fridge?
Water pooling inside the fridge — often under the crisper drawers — is most commonly a blocked defrost drain. The drain clogs and defrost water has nowhere to go but into the cabinet.
Is a leaking fridge dangerous?
It's not usually dangerous, but standing water can damage flooring and, if it reaches electrical components, should be addressed promptly. Most leaks are inexpensive to fix once diagnosed.
Can you fix a fridge leak the same day?
In most cases, yes. The common causes — blocked drains, worn seals — are repairs we can typically complete on the first visit.
