Fridge Not Cooling? Here Is What Is Going On
A fridge that runs but will not get cold is one of the most common and most urgent faults we are called out for. Here is what usually causes it, and how we put it right the same day.

What is usually behind it
Dirty condenser coils
If the coils at the back or underneath are caked in dust, the fridge cannot shed heat and slowly loses its ability to cool. This is one of the most common and most preventable causes.
Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor
If the thermostat is not telling the compressor to run at the right times, the fridge will not hold temperature even though everything else works.
Failed evaporator fan
This fan circulates cold air through the fridge. If it fails, the freezer may stay cold while the fridge section goes warm.
Defrost system fault
A blocked or failed defrost system lets ice build up over the coils, choking airflow until the fridge cannot cool properly.
Compressor or refrigerant issue
The most serious cause. If the compressor is struggling or there is a refrigerant problem, the fridge loses its ability to cool. This needs a qualified technician.

Quick checks worth trying first
Make sure the fridge is not packed so full that air cannot circulate, confirm the temperature dial has not been knocked, check the door is sealing properly, and gently vacuum any visible dust off the coils. If it is still warm after a few hours, it is time for a proper diagnosis.
