Washing Machine Leaking? Finding the Source
A leaking washer can dump a lot of water fast, and the source is not always where the puddle is. Here is where leaks actually come from, and how we find and fix them.
Common causes
What is usually behind it
Door seal damage on front loaders
The rubber boot around the door perishes or gets cut by trapped objects, leaking during the wash or spin.
Hose connections
Inlet and drain hoses loosen or perish with age. Leaks here often only show during fill or drain.
Pump housing and seals
A cracked pump housing or failed seal leaks underneath the machine, usually worst during draining.
Detergent drawer overflow
Blocked drawer pathways or too much detergent send water out the front of the drawer.
Tub seal failure
On top loaders, a worn tub seal leaks during agitation. Left alone it can damage the bearings below it.

Quick checks worth trying first
Note when the leak happens: during fill, mid wash, or draining. That timing points to the source. Turn off the taps when the machine is not in use, and avoid running it until it is repaired to protect your floor.
