Washing Machine Not Spinning? Causes & Repair
A washer that won't spin — leaving your clothes dripping wet — is one of the faults we're called out for most. Several different problems cause it, so the fix depends on a proper diagnosis.
When your washing machine fills, washes, but won't spin the water out, it's frustrating and leaves you with a drum full of sopping laundry. The cause can be mechanical, electrical or simply a drainage issue, which is why a correct diagnosis matters.
Common causes
- Drainage problem. Many machines won't spin until they've drained. A blocked pump, filter or drain hose can stop the spin cycle entirely — and this is often the simplest fix.
- Unbalanced load. Modern machines won't spin at full speed if the load is bunched to one side, as a safety measure. Sometimes redistributing the washing is all that's needed.
- Worn or broken drive belt. On belt-driven machines, a stretched or snapped belt means the motor turns but the drum doesn't.
- Faulty lid or door switch. If the machine doesn't think the lid or door is shut, it won't spin. A failed switch is a common, inexpensive cause.
- Worn motor brushes or motor fault. On many machines, worn carbon brushes or a motor fault will stop the spin while other functions still work.
Before you call: quick checks
Try a few checks first: redistribute the load evenly, make sure the door or lid is fully closed, and check the drain filter and hose for blockages (a surprising amount of lint and coins collect there). If it still won't spin after draining, it's time for a technician.

Frequently asked
Why won't my washing machine spin but it drains?
If it drains but won't spin, common causes are a worn drive belt, worn motor brushes, a faulty lid/door switch, or an unbalanced load triggering the machine's safety cut-out. A diagnosis confirms which.
Why are my clothes still soaking after a cycle?
Soaking clothes mean the spin cycle didn't run — often due to a drainage blockage, an unbalanced load, or a belt/motor fault. The machine may have drained partially but failed to spin.
Can a not-spinning washer be fixed same day?
Usually, yes. Many spin faults — drainage blockages, belts, switches — are parts we carry, so we can often repair on the first visit.
